Nigerian Army Warns Against IPOB Social Media Promotion in South East
The Nigerian Armed Forces have issued a firm warning to the people of the South East region, cautioning against the promotion of the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), particularly through social media platforms. This caution was conveyed by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, during a community engagement held in Omor, Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Represented by Group Captain Ibrahim Bukar, the Deputy Director of Defence Media Operations, General Musa addressed key community stakeholders as part of a peace-building initiative under Operation Udoka. The visit to the palace of the Obi Eze Ana-Uku, Eze Igulube of Omor, was aimed at fostering closer ties with the local population in a bid to restore lasting peace and strengthen national unity in the region.
During his address, General Musa expressed concern over the growing trend of spreading unverified and inflammatory information on social media. He warned that such actions not only endanger the peace and stability of the South East but also threaten the larger fabric of Nigeria’s unity. He urged the public to desist from supporting or amplifying the messages of proscribed groups, stating clearly that IPOB’s activities are not in the interest of the region or the country at large.
General Musa called for greater collaboration between the military and the people, noting that success in fighting insecurity depends heavily on trust and cooperation. He appealed to citizens to provide credible and actionable intelligence that can assist security forces in tackling criminal elements effectively. “The military belongs to the people,” he stated. “We are here to protect law-abiding citizens and restore peace. Our operations are never about taking sides but about securing the nation.”
He stressed that the military remains impartial and focused solely on neutralising threats to public safety. In cases of communal clashes or unrest, he reassured the people that the Armed Forces will continue to act professionally and constitutionally, ensuring that peace is restored without favour or bias.
Eze Igulube, the traditional ruler of Omor, commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their consistent presence and sacrifices in keeping the community safe. He acknowledged that their efforts have significantly contributed to reducing crime and giving residents the confidence to live and farm peacefully. According to him, Omor remains a peaceful farming community, and the people are ready to partner with the military by sharing intelligence and promoting peace.
The monarch described the military’s engagement as timely and necessary, praising their commitment and bravery. He pledged the support of his people in aiding the ongoing efforts to rid the region of criminal activity and ensure that peace returns permanently.
The event in Omor stands as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in balancing national security with civil cooperation. As Nigeria continues to combat various threats across its regions, community engagement and mutual trust between the people and the military are essential ingredients for lasting peace.
