President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a strong and unwavering message to his newly appointed ministers, calling for immediate results over mere attendance. Speaking on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the launch of a four-day Executive Leadership Programme for Ministerial Appointees, the President made it clear that under his leadership, performance would be the only acceptable metric for public office.

With the weight of national expectation on his shoulders, Mahama reminded his appointees that their role is not ceremonial, but a service-bound commitment to tackle the country's pressing issues. “You were not appointed to occupy space. You were appointed to solve problems,” he emphasised, setting the tone for a results-driven administration. He challenged the ministers to rise above complacency and embody the urgency of their responsibilities, underlining that Ghanaians expect delivery, not promises.

The leadership programme, organised in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was not described as a typical orientation. Instead, the President termed it a moment of recalibration—a reset in leadership mindset and approach. He called for a departure from old ways of governance, warning that the “business-as-usual” model has no place in the new administration.

President Mahama passionately appealed to the moral compass of his ministers, referencing the everyday struggles of citizens—especially the youth, farmers, and small-scale entrepreneurs, who are increasingly vocal in their demand for progress and opportunities. He painted a vivid picture of a Ghana where hardworking citizens yearn for transformation, dignity, and prosperity. According to him, these expectations can no longer go unmet. “Our young people are tired of waiting interminably. Our farmers, our workers, our entrepreneurs… want to live in dignity and prosperity,” he said, delivering a heartfelt charge.

In a striking show of accountability, the President left no room for underperformance. He stated that he would not hesitate to take action should any appointee fall short of their duties. “Please remember, when any of us fall short, I will not hesitate to act,” he cautioned, leaving little doubt about his expectations for results-oriented leadership.

The programme, which brought together government leaders, private sector actors, and international development partners, aims to establish a collaborative and visionary approach to governance. It reflects a broader commitment to ethical leadership, transparency, and accountability—pillars Mahama has promised will define his new tenure.

His remarks served as both a motivation and a warning. They were a reminder that public service is a privilege rooted in trust, not entitlement. In a political climate where citizens are demanding more transparency and action, Mahama’s declaration sets a high bar for leadership and signals a new chapter in Ghana’s governance.
