Amid rising political tensions in Rivers State, the sole administrator appointed to oversee governance following the state's escalating crisis has requested additional time to fully brief the House of Representatives. The move comes as lawmakers continue deliberations on the possibility of invoking emergency rule in the oil-rich state.
The administrator, whose role was instituted as a temporary measure to stabilize the state amid deepening political rifts, was scheduled to appear before the House this week. However, citing the complexity of the situation and the need for a comprehensive review of developments, the administrator has formally appealed for an extension to present a detailed report.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House, the administrator stated, “The situation on ground requires careful analysis and verified data before a complete briefing can be given. We ask for a short extension to ensure the House receives the most accurate and actionable information.”
This request comes in the wake of calls for federal intervention following a political standoff between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and loyalists of his predecessor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The resulting power struggle has led to administrative paralysis, fears of violence, and concern for the continuity of governance in the state.
Members of the House of Representatives, particularly from opposition parties, have expressed mixed reactions to the delay. While some argue that a thorough report is crucial to making informed decisions, others warn that postponing decisive action could worsen the situation in Rivers.
Chairman of the House Committee on National Security, Hon. Musa Aliyu, noted, “We understand the need for clarity, but we also cannot afford to delay responses that may be vital to protecting the lives and property of Rivers citizens.”
The call for emergency rule has sparked intense national debate, with legal experts and civil society groups warning against actions that could undermine democratic processes. Many insist that any resolution must come through constitutional means and respect for state autonomy.
As Nigeria watches closely, the administrator’s upcoming report is expected to play a key role in determining whether the National Assembly will move forward with emergency rule or pursue alternative solutions to restore peace and governance in Rivers State.
