A tense confrontation in Nyinahin, a community located in the Atwima Mponua District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, has resulted in both human casualties and infrastructural damage, leaving parts of the town in darkness. The incident, which unfolded during a clash between military personnel and civilians, tragically claimed the life of one person and left four others injured. However, beyond the human toll, the violence had another consequence—a stray bullet hit and damaged a vital electricity transformer, cutting off the power supply to the area.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has confirmed the development. Speaking to Channel One News, the Public Relations Officer for ECG in the Ashanti West region, Benjamin Obeng Antwi, explained that a bullet struck the transformer during the confusion. The damage caused by the gunfire has plunged parts of Nyinahin into a sudden and unsettling blackout. In a community where electricity powers everything from livelihoods to basic communication, the impact of this outage has quickly become another layer of the crisis.

According to Mr Antwi, ECG personnel have conducted a preliminary assessment but could not fully evaluate the extent of the damage due to the chaotic scene. He noted that while there was some visible oil leakage from the transformer, engineers could not conclude the scope of the damage on the spot. Plans are underway for a more detailed inspection by ECG engineers, who are expected to return to the site for a full evaluation once calm has been restored.

He expressed cautious optimism that the transformer may not be extensively damaged. “We hope the transformer doesn’t have any damage beyond the oil that was leaking today. Once we confirm it is only the oil, we can top up the oil and restore the supply to the community. So we are hopeful,” Mr Antwi shared.

Despite the hope, he admitted that ECG is currently unable to provide a specific timeline for when power will be fully restored. The uncertainty has added to the concerns of residents who now face not just the emotional trauma of the incident but also the challenges of living without electricity. For businesses, families, and essential services, the outage has already disrupted normal routines.

The Nyinahin community is left not only dealing with the aftermath of violence but also with the frustrating absence of power that sustains daily life. Residents are anxiously awaiting both the restoration of calm and the return of electricity. As officials continue to assess the situation and provide updates, the people of Nyinahin remain hopeful that power will soon be restored and that peace will prevail once again in their community.
