The quiet community of Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region has been shaken by a tragic shooting incident that claimed one life and left three others injured. The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident, which unfolded during a funeral ceremony on the morning of Thursday, April 24, 2025.

According to the police report, the altercation began around 10:30 a.m. when a military vehicle transporting personnel made an unplanned stop after spotting one of the funeral attendees dressed in military camouflage. The individual, later identified as Akwasi Lala, popularly known as Kushivi, reportedly became the focus of the soldiers' attention due to his attire.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the military officers approached him and attempted to forcibly remove his camouflage clothing. The confrontation escalated into a scuffle, during which a soldier allegedly shot the young man in the head. He died instantly, sending shockwaves through the gathering. The unfortunate death of Kushivi triggered further chaos, prompting the military personnel to open fire in what was described as an attempt to prevent retaliation from the crowd.

In the process, three additional mourners sustained injuries. They were immediately rushed to the Nyinahin Government Hospital for medical attention. One of the victims, whose condition required advanced care, was later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for specialised treatment.

In response to the incident, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, visited the crime scene as well as the hospital where the injured were being treated. He reassured residents that a thorough investigation was underway and promised that those found culpable would be held accountable, in accordance with the law.

The police are currently engaging the Central Military Command to ensure the military personnel involved are released to assist with investigations. The authorities have called for calm in the wake of the tragic event and urged community members to cooperate fully to help establish the facts and ensure justice is served.

The unfortunate incident has raised questions about the use of force and the relationship between civilians and security personnel, particularly in emotionally charged settings like funerals. While military uniforms remain protected attire under Ghanaian law, many believe the approach to enforcing such regulations should be handled with tact and sensitivity.

As investigations continue, the people of Nyinahin and the entire region await clarity on what led to such a deadly encounter. The hope is that justice will not only be done but seen to be done, bringing peace to the bereaved family and restoring confidence in the nation’s security protocols.
