Eastern Region: President Mahama to Complete Abandoned Regional Hospital – Thomas Anaba
Dr. Thomas Anaba, an illustrious medical doctor and Member of Parliament for Garu, has assured the people of the Eastern Region that former President John Dramani Mahama is committed to the achievement of the long-abandoned regional hospital project in the region. In his estimation, this commitment is part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)'s master plan to renovate some of the main health infrastructure and ensure healthcare delivery to all Ghanaians.
The Eastern Regional Hospital project was but one of several of the large health projects launched during Mahama's first term. It was designed as a state-of-the-art, fully equipped medical complex to serve as a referral facility for other districts within the region. However, with the NDC out of power in 2017, work on the hospital was unceremoniously halted. The building has since rested unfinished, denying residents the medical facilities promised.
Dr. Anaba, equally infamous for his loud demands on healthcare issues, criticized the incumbent government for abandoning such a significant project. He emphasized that the lack of a fully functional regional hospital has taken a dire toll on the lives of the residents, who are typically forced to travel long distances just to receive quality healthcare in Accra or elsewhere. He said that these delays in treatment always result in unnecessary complications, especially for patients who have chronic or emergency illnesses.
He reiterated that the NDC does not view the completion of this hospital as a political gimmick but as a matter of conscience. "Healthcare is a fundamental human right.". We started this project to meet the health need of the people of the Eastern Region, and we will finish it," he said. He again said that John Mahama has made health infrastructure a core pillar of his comeback bid and has already embarked on mapping out the strategies to complete all the abandoned projects, if he is elected at the next election.
Dr. Anaba also responded to issues of how the NDC would finance and execute the project if and when they come to power. Dr. Anaba declared that the party has devised a complete financing and execution plan to deliver the project within the shortest time. This will include mobilizing local and external sources of funds, securing contracts with seasoned contractors, and putting in place tight monitoring systems to prevent cost overruns and delay.
The potential resuscitation of the project has been welcomed by residents and traditional leaders in the Eastern Region. Residents have looked forward to a completed regional hospital not only improving the accessibility of health care but also providing employment and boosting economic activity in the region.
In his address, Dr. Anaba reminded the people of Ghana that under Mahama's previous government, unprecedented progress was made in expanding healthcare infrastructure across the nation. From the construction of district hospitals and health centers to the training of medical personnel and the provision of equipment, he said the NDC has an established record of health sector development.
He concluded by calling on all patriotic Ghanaians in and out of politics to contribute to the endeavor to complete the hospital. "This is not politics; it's lives. The Eastern Regional Hospital must be completed for our mothers, fathers, children, and future generations."
Briefly, the NDC's pledge to completing the abandoned Eastern Regional Hospital is not a campaign promise but an act of leadership committed to people-centered development. With renewed urgency and determination, the party seeks to transform this abandoned project into a symbol of hope and success for the Eastern Region and the country at large.
