World Leaders Gather to Mourn Pope Francis at Funeral

On April 26, 2025, the world bid farewell to Pope Francis in a poignant funeral ceremony held in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City. The event drew an estimated 200,000 attendees, including over 50 heads of state and government, 12 monarchs, and numerous dignitaries from around the globe .

Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88, was remembered for his unwavering commitment to social justice, inclusivity, and environmental advocacy during his 12-year papacy. The funeral Mass, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, commenced a nine-day mourning period, known as the novemdiales, during which cardinals will concelebrate Mass in his memory .

Among the notable attendees were U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Additionally, royals such as Prince William and Queen Mary of Denmark, as well as leaders from countries including Brazil, Italy, Germany, and Sweden, were present to honor the late pontiff .

In a departure from tradition, Pope Francis was interred at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, making him the first pope in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican walls. Prior to the private interment, his coffin was ceremonially received by a group of impoverished and marginalized individuals, reflecting his lifelong commitment to social justice .

The funeral was broadcast live on global networks and streamed through the Vatican’s official YouTube and Facebook pages. Many viewers left messages of grief, love, and gratitude in the comments, sharing how Pope Francis had impacted their lives regardless of faith.

As the sun set over Rome, a sense of unity and loss echoed across nations. Pope Francis leaves behind a legacy not only as the first Jesuit and first Latin American pope but as a symbol of bridge-building in an often-divided world. His call for a “Church that is poor and for the poor” continues to inspire people far beyond the confines of Catholicism.

While the Vatican begins preparations for the conclave that will elect his successor, the memory of Pope Francis is sure to endure—in the hearts of the faithful, the halls of world power, and the streets where he often walked without fanfare, simply as a servant of peace.
