TRUMP THREATENS PUTIN WITH SANCTIONS AFTER TENSE MEETING WITH ZELENSKY AT THE VATICAN

In a dramatic shift in tone, President Donald Trump sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin and threatened sweeping new sanctions following a private meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting, which took place at the Vatican ahead of Pope Francis’s funeral on April 26, 2025, marks one of Trump's most aggressive stances yet toward Moscow since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Trump, who returned to the presidency earlier this year, met with Zelensky one-on-one in the Vatican basilica to discuss pathways toward ending the two-year-long conflict. Though initial reports suggested Trump aimed to broker a quick peace deal, the meeting reportedly grew tense when Trump floated the controversial idea of Ukraine officially recognizing Crimea as Russian territory. Zelensky firmly rejected the suggestion, calling it unconstitutional and a betrayal of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Following the meeting, Trump expressed frustration with Russia’s recent escalation of missile attacks on civilian targets across Ukraine. Speaking to reporters outside the Vatican, he questioned Putin's sincerity in seeking peace. "Putin says he wants peace, but his actions show otherwise," Trump said. "If Russia does not come to the table with real intentions, we will impose very serious sanctions — tougher than anything they've seen before."

The president’s tough rhetoric marks a notable departure from his earlier, more accommodating tone toward Russia. Throughout his political career, Trump has often spoken about negotiating with Putin directly and bringing an end to the war through what he described as "dealmaking." However, recent developments — particularly Russia's intensified attacks on Ukrainian civilians — appear to have hardened his stance.

Observers say Trump’s move may be driven as much by geopolitics as by domestic pressures. His administration has faced criticism for temporarily pausing military aid to Ukraine while reassessing U.S. involvement in the conflict. By threatening punitive measures against Moscow, Trump could be seeking to reassure allies and fend off accusations of being soft on Russia.

Meanwhile, Russian officials responded cautiously to Trump’s remarks. Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's deputy ambassador to the United Nations, said Moscow was open to negotiations but needed to better understand the specifics of any U.S.-backed proposal. “We have heard many promises before,” Polyanskiy said, “but real peace requires real dialogue, not ultimatums.”

Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue over the coming weeks, with meetings between U.S. and Ukrainian officials scheduled in Saudi Arabia. Some insiders suggest that Trump’s sanctions threat may be a negotiating tactic designed to pressure Putin into accepting a ceasefire framework that preserves Ukraine’s territorial integrity — minus Crimea.

The Vatican setting underscored the stakes involved. Pope Francis, who throughout his papacy advocated for peace in Ukraine, was seen by some as a symbol of hope that diplomacy might succeed where weapons have failed. However, the funeral also served as a sobering reminder of the human cost of global conflict.

As Trump moves forward with his more confrontational approach, many questions remain. Will harsher sanctions push Russia to the negotiating table, or will they deepen Putin’s resolve? Will Ukraine accept any deal that involves territorial concessions? And can the U.S. maintain a leadership role without committing further military resources?

For now, Trump’s threat has injected new urgency into a diplomatic stalemate that has dragged on for far too long. Whether it leads to peace — or escalates tensions further — may depend not just on Washington and Moscow, but on the resilience and determination of Ukraine itself.
