MTN Group Confirms Cybersecurity Breach, Assures Customers of System Integrity.
Telecommunications giant MTN Group has confirmed a cybersecurity breach involving unauthorized access to personal data in certain countries where it operates. Although the company has not yet disclosed which countries were affected, it assured customers that its core systems, billing platforms, and financial services remain secure and fully operational.
In a statement issued on April 24, 2025, MTN attributed the breach to an intrusion by an unknown third party, who claims to have accessed parts of the company’s systems. However, MTN emphasized that there is no evidence to suggest that customers' accounts or mobile money (MoMo) wallets have been directly compromised.
"An unknown third party has claimed to have accessed data linked to parts of our systems," MTN stated. "At this stage, we do not have any information to suggest that customers’ accounts and wallets have been directly compromised."
Following the breach, MTN promptly activated its cybersecurity protocols and notified law enforcement authorities, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks. Authorities in affected countries were also informed, and the company is cooperating fully with ongoing investigations.
MTN has begun notifying impacted customers in accordance with local legal and regulatory requirements and has issued general security advice. Customers were urged to remain vigilant, place fraud alerts on their credit reports, keep apps and devices updated, and use strong, unique passwords. The company also advised caution against suspicious messages or links and encouraged the activation of multifactor authentication where available.
"Do not disclose sensitive information such as passwords, PINs, and OTPs via phone, text message, or email," MTN cautioned.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and customer protection, MTN stressed that data privacy remains its top priority.
"We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully," the company said. "MTN remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of our systems and maintaining the trust placed in us by our customers and stakeholders."
