It’s all fun for those who just played Premier League Gameweek 34. Chelsea striker Nicolas finally ended a four-month goal drought, while Wolves secured a 3-0 win against already-relegated Leicester City. Brighton also defeated West Ham — of course, this is the Premier League, where anything can happen.

But let’s shift our focus to the newly relegated club in town: Ipswich Town.

Ipswich Town has officially been relegated from the Premier League to the Championship after a 3-0 loss to Newcastle today. This news comes as a blow to Ipswich, who were newly promoted to the Premier League at the end of the 2023–2024 season, making the 2024–2025 campaign their first top-flight season in over 20 years. Ipswich Town now joins Southampton and Leicester City, whose relegations were confirmed earlier in the season.

Southampton and Leicester City were promoted alongside Ipswich Town for the 2024–2025 season.

In today’s match, Ipswich Town’s player Johnson was shown a red card in the 37th minute. Newcastle’s Alexander Isak then smartly converted a penalty in the 45+4th minute, while goals from Dan Burn (56th minute) and William Osula (80th minute) sealed a comfortable 3-0 victory for Newcastle, with Ipswich unable to respond.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s win sees them move up to third place in the Premier League standings with 62 points, just five points behind second-placed Arsenal. This result comes after their disappointing loss to Aston Villa last week.

Things are far less rosy for Ipswich Town, who, after just getting a taste of the Premier League, are now heading back to the Championship. The side managed only 21 points from 34 matches, and with just four games remaining — and 12 points left to collect — it is mathematically impossible for them to avoid relegation, as they are 15 points behind 17th-placed West Ham, who are on 36 points.

Not only have Ipswich been relegated, but they also risk losing one of their top strikers, Liam Delap, who is reportedly on the radar of several Premier League clubs. Delap has a £30 million relegation release clause that can now be triggered.

Replacing the 21-year-old talent could prove difficult for Ipswich. Moreover, if they aim to return to the Premier League by performing well in the Championship, they will also need to create a long-term plan that would allow them to fight for survival and avoid another relegation battle in the future.
