The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the arrest of 40 individuals for impersonation during the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The arrests were made across several examination centers nationwide as part of JAMB’s intensified efforts to curb malpractice and protect the integrity of its examinations.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed the arrests while speaking to reporters. He emphasized that the board’s monitoring teams had been deployed strategically to identify and apprehend those attempting to sit for the examination on behalf of registered candidates. According to Oloyede, the suspects were caught with fake identities, and some had even gone as far as altering biometric data to gain unauthorized access to exam halls.

“We have zero tolerance for examination malpractice. These impersonators will face prosecution, and their collaborators will not be spared either,” Professor Oloyede stated. He reiterated JAMB’s commitment to ensuring that only deserving candidates gain admission into tertiary institutions.

Meanwhile, several parents have voiced their concerns over the early resumption time set for candidates during the exams. Some examination centers requested students to report as early as 6:30 a.m., a situation many parents described as stressful and unsafe, particularly for young candidates traveling from distant areas.

Mrs. Funmi Adeyemi, a parent in Lagos, said, “Asking students to resume before dawn puts them at unnecessary risk. Transportation is a challenge, and some of these children are just 15 or 16 years old.”

Other parents echoed similar sentiments, urging JAMB to reconsider the resumption schedule to make it more convenient and secure for candidates. They proposed that examination start times should be adjusted slightly later to accommodate candidates' safety and well-being.

In response, JAMB officials acknowledged the complaints but explained that the early resumption times are necessary to allow biometric verification, security checks, and smooth coordination before the actual commencement of exams.

As the UTME continues nationwide, JAMB has reassured the public of its dedication to conducting a transparent and credible examination process. The board also urged candidates and parents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around examination centers.

The 2024 UTME is expected to conclude in the coming weeks, with results being processed for prompt release.
