A political group loyal to former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has called on Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, to publicly declare his political intentions ahead of the 2027 general elections. The group, under the banner of the South South Progressive Alliance (SSPA), made the call during a press briefing in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Speaking to journalists, the group's coordinator, Mr. Isaac Boma, stressed the importance of transparency in leadership. He urged Governor Diri to make his position known regarding the next election cycle, particularly his alignment within the shifting political landscape of the South South region.
Boma noted that with the growing influence of political heavyweights like Wike, it was crucial for key leaders in the region to clearly state where they stand. “Governor Diri must tell Bayelsans and the South-South region where he stands concerning 2027. Silence is no longer an option when political realignments are already underway,” Boma said.
He emphasized that the South South needed strong representation at the national level and warned against leaders who preferred to sit on the fence. According to him, the people deserve to know whether Diri would back a collective regional agenda or pursue personal political interests.
The SSPA further stated that the stakes are high for the region, especially with talks of zoning, restructuring, and national unity dominating political discussions ahead of 2027. They insisted that leaders must demonstrate courage and a clear vision to ensure the South-South does not lose its voice in national affairs.
Governor Diri has so far maintained a cautious approach, focusing on governance and steering clear of political speculation. His media aides have consistently said that his priority remains the development of Bayelsa State rather than premature politicking.
However, political observers believe that growing pressure from groups like the SSPA may eventually force Diri to make a public declaration sooner rather than later.
