A prominent chieftain of the Labour Party (LP) has urged the party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, to disregard growing calls for him to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The LP stalwart, Chief Martins Eze, made this appeal while addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to Eze, Obi has become a symbol of a new political movement that many Nigerians, especially the youth, now believe in. He argued that returning to the PDP would not only betray the trust millions of Nigerians have placed in him but would also diminish the credibility he has built over the years.
"Peter Obi represents hope for a new Nigeria. His decision to leave the PDP and join the Labour Party was a move toward a fresh political ideology that resonates with the average Nigerian," Eze said. "He must not be distracted by political jobbers who are uncomfortable with the rising popularity of the Labour Party."
Eze further noted that Obi’s movement has transcended political party lines, emphasizing that the former Anambra governor now leads a national conversation about good governance, accountability, and citizen participation. He insisted that rejoining the PDP would be seen as a step backward and could alienate the millions of supporters who rallied behind him in 2023.
Several political analysts have observed that since the end of the 2023 elections, there have been subtle and open calls from PDP figures urging Obi to return to his former party. However, Eze believes that Obi must stay focused on consolidating the gains already made and preparing the Labour Party for greater political battles ahead.
He added that the Labour Party, under Obi’s leadership, has a real chance of becoming a strong alternative to the traditional political powers in Nigeria. "We need to build on what we have started. Returning to the old system would only reinforce the belief that true change is impossible," he said.
Peter Obi has yet to officially respond to the calls, but sources close to him suggest he remains committed to the Labour Party and the vision he has championed since his defection from the PDP.
As political alignments begin to shift in preparation for the 2027 elections, all eyes remain on Obi and the path he chooses to follow.
