A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Aliyu Modibbo Umar, has expressed concern over the increasing obsession with wealth among today’s youth, warning that it is placing them under immense and unnecessary pressure.
Speaking during a youth empowerment program in Abuja on Monday, Umar lamented that the current generation seems overly fixated on the pursuit of money, often at the expense of personal development, hard work, and genuine success. He argued that the relentless chase for quick riches is not only creating anxiety but is also fueling societal vices such as fraud, cybercrime, and moral decay.
"Our young people are under significant pressure because society now glorifies wealth without questioning its source," Umar said. "Many young individuals feel they must achieve financial success by any means necessary, and this mindset is both dangerous and unsustainable."
The former minister emphasized that true success is a product of consistency, perseverance, and ethical conduct, not shortcuts or illegitimate means. He urged young Nigerians to focus more on building skills, acquiring knowledge, and contributing meaningfully to society rather than being consumed by materialism.
Umar also called on parents, community leaders, and the media to reorient societal values by promoting hard work, integrity, and patience. He stressed that role models in society should be those who have achieved success through legitimate efforts, not individuals who flaunt questionable wealth.
"We need to celebrate teachers, doctors, engineers, and entrepreneurs who have worked hard over the years to achieve their dreams, not just celebrities and businessmen with unclear backgrounds," he added.
Participants at the event agreed with Umar’s sentiments, acknowledging that the pressure to appear successful has led many young people into risky behaviors. They called for more mentorship programs and positive youth engagements to counter the trend.
As Nigeria continues to battle issues related to youth unemployment and societal instability, Umar’s advice serves as a reminder that sustainable progress lies in nurturing a generation grounded in values, patience, and genuine achievement, not in the unhealthy race for wealth.
The message resonated strongly with many attendees, who expressed renewed determination to pursue success with integrity and resilience.
