Tensions are running high in Bayelsa State following a violent clash at a political rally that left several people injured. The state government and a pro-Wike political group have been trading blame over who is responsible for the shootings that disrupted the event.

The incident, which occurred during a rally organized by the pro Wike faction, turned chaotic when unknown gunmen reportedly opened fire on the gathering. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as attendees scrambled for safety, with many sustaining injuries in the process.

In a swift reaction, the Bayelsa State Government condemned the violence and accused the pro Wike group of attempting to incite unrest in the state. The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Ayibaina Duba, described the rally as an "unauthorized gathering" and alleged that the organizers had disregarded security advisories issued prior to the event.

"It is unfortunate that a group bent on destabilizing the peace of Bayelsa State would proceed with such a gathering despite clear warnings. The government will ensure that those responsible for this breach are held accountable," Duba said.

However, leaders of the pro Wike group have denied any wrongdoing, instead blaming the state government for the violence. According to their spokesperson, Mr. Emmanuel Pere, the rally was peaceful until "government-sponsored thugs" attacked participants.

"We obtained the necessary permits and organized a peaceful rally. It was the agents of the government who turned it violent in a desperate attempt to silence opposing voices," Pere claimed.

The Bayelsa State Police Command has since confirmed the incident and announced that investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute those behind the shootings. The Commissioner of Police, Alonyenu Ben, urged political actors to exercise restraint and allow the police to do their work without interference.

The clash has sparked widespread condemnation from civil society groups and other political stakeholders, who called for calm and urged all parties to resolve their differences peacefully. Many fear that if tensions are not quickly addressed, it could escalate and threaten the fragile peace in the state ahead of the next election cycle.

As investigations continue, residents of Bayelsa are hoping for justice and a return to normalcy, while leaders on both sides continue to trade accusations over the unfortunate incident.
