President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the "Adwumawura Programme" in Kumasi, Ashanti Region. The initiative, which was unveiled on Monday, April 28, 2025, is a major part of his vision to tackle the country's growing youth unemployment challenge and stimulate entrepreneurship nationwide.
Addressing a large crowd of government officials, youth groups, traditional leaders, and development partners, President Mahama described the Adwumawura Programme as a "game-changer" for Ghana's young population. He emphasized that the future of Ghana's economy rests in the hands of its youth, and it is crucial to create systems that equip them with the necessary tools and opportunities to thrive.
The Adwumawura Programme aims to support the creation of at least 10,000 new businesses each year, specifically targeting young Ghanaians aged 18 to 35. It will provide skills training, mentorship, access to startup capital, and equipment to enable young entrepreneurs to transform their business ideas into viable enterprises. By focusing on practical skills and entrepreneurial innovation, the programme is expected to significantly reduce unemployment rates and foster self-sufficiency among the youth.
This initiative is part of President Mahama's broader 120-day social contract, which outlines urgent actions his administration is committed to delivering within the early days of governance. The Adwumawura Programme will be jointly managed by the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment and the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP). To ensure its successful implementation, the 2025 Budget has already allocated a dedicated sum of GH₵100 million.
In his speech, President Mahama noted that youth unemployment is one of the most pressing challenges facing Ghana today. He said, "We cannot sit back and allow the talents and energy of our young people to go to waste. Adwumawura is a promise kept — a promise to invest directly in the dreams and futures of our youth."
Alongside Adwumawura, two other major initiatives are expected to be launched later this week: the Ghana Medical Trust Fund ("Mahama Cares"), designed to improve healthcare access for all citizens, and the National Apprenticeship Programme, aimed at providing vocational and technical training to thousands of young Ghanaians. Together, these programmes represent a multi-faceted approach to social and economic development.
The Adwumawura launch event received widespread praise from attendees, who expressed hope that it would mark a turning point for economic opportunities in the Ashanti Region and beyond. Many traditional leaders and youth group representatives pledged their full support, encouraging young people to actively engage with the programme and take advantage of the opportunities it offers.
Observers have hailed the move as timely and strategic, especially given the persistent economic challenges faced by many young people in Ghana. If successfully implemented, the Adwumawura Programme could become a cornerstone for fostering a new generation of entrepreneurs, innovators, and job creators especially for the youth.
