The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended warm congratulations to the Republic of South Africa as the country celebrates its 31st Freedom Day anniversary. The celebration marks over three decades since the end of apartheid and the beginning of a democratic era in South Africa, a historic moment that continues to resonate across the African continent.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria applauded South Africa’s unwavering commitment to democratic ideals, human rights, and national unity. The statement noted that South Africa’s journey toward freedom remains a powerful example to other nations striving for justice, equality, and inclusive governance.

The Nigerian government emphasized the deep historical ties between both nations, recalling Nigeria’s pivotal role during the apartheid era. Nigeria, alongside other African nations, had supported South Africa’s liberation movements morally, diplomatically, and financially. The statement reiterated that Nigeria remains committed to strengthening its long standing relationship with South Africa through continued collaboration in areas such as trade, education, security, and cultural exchange.

"On this significant occasion, the Government and people of Nigeria celebrate with our South African brothers and sisters," the statement read. "We recognize the sacrifices made by countless heroes and heroines whose efforts paved the way for the birth of a free and democratic South Africa."

Freedom Day, observed annually on April 27, commemorates the country’s first post-apartheid elections held in 1994, when all South Africans, regardless of race, voted for the first time. The day is seen as a powerful symbol of national unity, resilience, and the triumph of the human spirit over oppression.

As part of its message, Nigeria also called for deeper continental cooperation, urging African nations to work together in addressing the challenges of poverty, insecurity, and inequality. According to the statement, Africa’s future depends on stronger unity and a collective commitment to democratic values.

South African officials expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s gesture, describing it as a reaffirmation of the enduring bond between the two countries.

As South Africa celebrates this milestone, many across the continent view the anniversary as a reminder of Africa’s shared struggles and collective victories in the quest for freedom and dignity.
