Every Champions League Winner Since 1956

The UEFA Champions League, known as the European Cup until 1992, has been the pinnacle of European club football since it began in 1956. Over the years, it's given fans unforgettable moments, dramatic finals, and the rise of football legends. Real Madrid were the very first winners back in 1956 and they set the tone by winning the first five tournaments in a row – a feat no one has repeated since.

In the 1960s, the competition saw a mix of winners like Benfica, AC Milan, and Celtic – who became the first British team to lift the trophy in 1967. Manchester United followed suit in 1968, famously winning after the tragic Munich air disaster just a decade earlier.

The 1970s were dominated by Ajax and Bayern Munich, with each team winning three titles in a row. Then Liverpool came into the picture, winning four titles between 1977 and 1984, becoming one of Europe’s most feared sides.

The 1980s had a more varied mix of winners including Aston Villa, Hamburg, Steaua Bucharest, and Porto. AC Milan then began their golden era, winning in 1989, 1990, and again in 1994.

The competition rebranded to the “Champions League” in 1992, and the format changed to include group stages and more teams. This modern era has seen clubs like Barcelona, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich claim multiple titles. The 2005 final between Liverpool and AC Milan is still considered one of the greatest, with Liverpool coming back from 3–0 down to win on penalties.

Real Madrid have been the kings of the Champions League, especially in recent years, winning five times between 2014 and 2022. Their total stands at a record 14 titles.

Manchester City became first-time winners in 2023 under Pep Guardiola, finally achieving the long-awaited goal after years of investment.

As of 2024, the final is set between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. If Madrid win again, it’ll just add to their unbelievable record in this competition. It’s safe to say the Champions League remains the most exciting club tournament in the world – filled with drama, magic, and history.
