GOVT LAUNCHES ‘NO-FEE-STRESS’ PORTAL FOR FIRST-YEAR TERTIARY STUDENTS

In a determined effort to widen access to tertiary education and ease the financial burden on students, the Government of Ghana has launched a new digital portal under its ‘No-Fee-Stress’ policy. This portal, now live as of Tuesday, April 29, 2025, is aimed at enabling first-year students in public tertiary institutions to apply online for financial assistance with ease and convenience.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu unveiled the online application platform during a highly anticipated ceremony in Accra. The initiative represents a core part of the government’s commitment to dismantling financial barriers that have historically hindered brilliant but needy students from furthering their education beyond the secondary level. With the cost of higher education remaining a pressing concern for many Ghanaian households, the policy has been welcomed as a timely and visionary step towards inclusive national development.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister described the No-Fee-Stress policy as a bold and transformative intervention. He emphasised that it is not just a short-term relief measure but a long-term investment in Ghana’s human capital. According to him, the goal is to give every qualified student a fair shot at higher learning without being held back by financial limitations. The portal is designed to be user-friendly and efficient, reducing paperwork and eliminating long queues that typically characterise financial aid applications.

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), the statutory body mandated to provide loans and financial assistance to students in accredited tertiary institutions, has been tasked with rolling out and managing the portal. SLTF officials have assured applicants of a seamless process, assuring them that all qualified students will be supported fairly and promptly. The launch of this platform signifies an advanced shift towards digitisation in public service delivery, aligning with Ghana’s broader ambition to modernise administrative systems through technology.

With increasing numbers of secondary school graduates qualifying for tertiary education, the pressure on families to fund higher education has grown significantly. Many students, despite gaining admission into universities and other institutions, are often forced to defer their studies or abandon their ambitions entirely due to financial hardship. This policy seeks to change that narrative and provide a safety net for those at the beginning of their academic journey. 

By targeting first-year students in public tertiary institutions, the policy focuses on those most vulnerable to economic challenges. It also sets the tone for a future in which access to education is determined not by wealth or background, but by merit and aspiration. The digital portal’s functionality ensures applicants can register, upload documents, and track the status of their applications from the comfort of their homes or campuses, removing bureaucratic bottlenecks and promoting transparency.

The reaction from the public has been largely positive, with students, parents, and education advocates hailing the move as a game-changer. Many believe that by eliminating the financial stress associated with the start of tertiary education, the government is creating a more level playing field for all students. It also comes at a time when Ghana continues to prioritise education as a cornerstone of socio-economic growth and national transformation.

Education analysts have commended the Ministry for taking such an inclusive and forward-thinking approach, noting that financial aid policies like this have the power to unlock talent and fuel innovation. As the portal continues to gain traction, thousands of students across the country are expected to benefit, laying the foundation for a new generation of skilled and educated Ghanaians ready to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
