Could Erik Ten Hag Take Over at Bayer Leverkusen? Here's What's Going On

So, there’s been some interesting news coming out of Germany. Bayer Leverkusen, who’ve been absolutely flying under Xabi Alonso, are apparently planning ahead just in case he decides to leave at the end of the season. And guess who’s being linked as a possible replacement? Erik ten Hag.

Yes, the same Ten Hag who managed Ajax and more recently Manchester United. According to reports from Kicker, Leverkusen have added him to a list of potential managers to take over if Alonso moves on. And let’s be real — with the way Alonso’s been managing, it wouldn’t be a shock if bigger clubs like Liverpool or Bayern Munich came calling.

Honestly, it makes sense that Leverkusen are being cautious. Alonso has completely transformed the team. They’ve been playing some of the best football in Europe — high intensity, creative, and confident. But if he decides to leave, the club won’t want to lose momentum.

Enter Ten Hag time at Manchester United didn’t end the way he probably hoped, but we can’t forget what he did at Ajax. That team in 2019? Unreal. Young players, fast attacking football, and a deep run in the Champions League — all under his leadership.

Sure, things didn’t go perfectly in England, but let’s be fair — United hasn’t exactly been the easiest club to manage in recent years. A fresh start at a well-structured team like Leverkusen might actually be perfect for him. He’s already shown he can get a team playing stylish, winning football.

Right now, nothing official is happening. No talks or negotiations, just early planning. But if Alonso leaves (and I honestly think he might, depending on the offers), Leverkusen could move fast.

As for Ten Hag, he’s not working with any team at the moment. He’s taking a bit of a break, but word is he’s open to coming back — just waiting for the right opportunity. A club like Leverkusen could be exactly what he’s looking for.

In my opinion, this could be a win-win. Leverkusen gets a proven coach who matches their style, and Ten Hag gets a chance to rebuild his rep in a more stable environment.

Let’s see how it all plays out. But one thing’s for sure — Leverkusen is not sleeping on this.
