The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has firmly refuted recent claims made by one Henry Okunomu, who allegedly presented himself as a former Senate President of the association. In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by the National Public Relations Officer, Comrade Adeyemi Ajasa, NANS dismissed Okunomu’s claims as false, labeling them a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and blackmail the organization.
According to the statement, Okunomu has never held the position of Senate President in NANS, contrary to his claims during an appearance on Channels Television. The association made it clear that his assertions are not only baseless but also damaging to the credibility of the student body.
In addition, NANS rejected any notion that a certain Mr. Abubakr is currently serving as its president. The association clarified that the only legally recognized and duly elected president of NANS is Comrade Olushola Oladoja, who represents the interests of Nigerian students across the country.
NANS expressed concern over the role of media outlets in spreading falsehoods, emphasizing that some platforms have failed in their responsibility to verify the identities and credentials of guests they feature. The association criticized these media houses for providing a platform to individuals spreading misinformation that undermines the integrity of NANS.
Reaffirming its adherence to democratic principles, the association highlighted that its leadership emerges through a constitutionally governed and transparent process. This includes proper vetting, screening of aspirants, and security involvement during its conventions. It condemned any suggestion that financial power can override its established procedures as completely unfounded and insulting.
Furthermore, NANS asserted its independence from any political affiliation, stating categorically that it does not operate as an extension of any political party or government. The association reiterated its commitment to holding all stakeholders accountable, regardless of political ties, particularly when student interests are at stake.
Concluding the statement, NANS warned against the misuse of its name for political gain or blackmail. It urged media platforms to be more responsible and committed to truth, while emphasizing its unwavering dedication to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerian students.
