A Corps Member, Monica Patrick, on Thursday donated 300 sanitary pads to her fellow corps members at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Okada, Edo State.

Patrick, who is currently serving in the state, said the initiative was part of her effort to promote menstrual hygiene and women’s health.

The University of Calabar graduate also organized a workshop on vaginal hygiene to complement the donation.

She explained that her motivation stemmed from a deep concern for the welfare of girls and women.

“I’ve always wanted to support the girl-child and women,” she said. “This event, which includes a health talk and free sanitary pad distribution, is part of that mission. I appreciate the support from the state coordinator, platoon leaders, and my elder brother, Dr. Prince Michael.”

The health session was led by Fatima Hassan, Executive Director of the Women for Greater Good Foundation, who educated participants on proper vaginal hygiene and safe menstrual practices.

“The vagina is a key part of a woman’s reproductive system and needs to be kept clean,” she said, emphasizing hand hygiene, keeping the area dry, and avoiding harmful practices like douching.

NYSC State Coordinator Dr. Frances Ben-Ushie praised Monica’s initiative, noting its importance given the large number of female corps members at the camp, which she placed at 864.

She pointed out that not all women at the camp may have the resources or awareness to practice proper menstrual hygiene, and described the project as both helpful and inspiring.

Ben-Ushie, who also founded the Florish Foundation for Women and Youth, officially launched the organization at the event. Established in 2023, the foundation focuses on health and education and works with NYSC on projects such as sickle cell awareness, genotype testing, and rural health outreach.

She stressed the critical need for genotype education, especially among young people and couples, to help prevent sickle cell disease, which affects around 150,000 Nigerian children annually.

She added that corps members, as influential agents of change, can play a major role in spreading awareness and promoting healthier communities across the country.
