Manchester United have once again proven that they are the kings of the Europa League. The Red Devils stunned Athletic Bilbao with a 3–0 win in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals.
This marks United’s 13th Europa League game without a loss this season, making them the only undefeated club in the competition. Casemiro opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Bilbao were then reduced to 10 men after Vivian received a red card for a last-man foul on Højlund.
My Captain Bruno Fernandes converted the resulting penalty and went on to score again in the 45th minute, bringing the goals to 3–0 before halftime. Manuel Ugarte provided two assists—one for Casemiro’s goal and the other for Bruno’s second.
Sure, Manchester United haven’t been performing well in the Premier League, but the players seem to understand that winning the Europa League—and securing Champions League qualification by extension—is not just their only chance to salvage the current season but also crucial for next season. Champions League football may be key to attracting big-name signings.
Although Højlund didn’t score, he’s one player I’m proud of in this win. Still, I believe United need another striker—an experienced one.
Højlund won a penalty, made two key passes, completed one of his two dribbles, had a 94% passing accuracy, and won 3 out of 4 ground duels. Just as United coach Anorim said, Højlund needs a goal, and hopefully, his Premier League form will help unlock him.
Meanwhile, Amad Diallo also made his return from injury as a substitute. Though he didn’t record a goal or assist, his presence delighted many United fans, including me. This is the same player who has rescued United in key games—especially with his hat-trick against Southampton. Hopefully, his comeback can help power United’s Europa League dreams.
United would face Bilbao in the second leg hopefully they can keep this momentum with another clean sheet at Old Trafford.
