As we look forward to a significant ceremony filled with anticipation and gratitude, the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UPNMG) of TUC (Ghana) is set to bestow one of its highest honors—the 2025 Central Regional Best Nursing and Midwifery Staff Award—on a man whose name is already synonymous with compassion and excellence: Brother John Bamondo.

On May Day 2025, we can expect a heartfelt gathering in Cape Coast, where healthcare professionals, union leaders, and community members will come together to celebrate unsung heroes. All eyes will be on Brother John, a Nursing Officer at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, as he prepares to humbly accept an award that will encapsulate decades of silent sacrifices. We envision him standing proudly, his hands—accustomed to healing—trembling slightly as he holds the plaque, a symbol of a lifetime spent elevating others.

The Heartbeat of Cape Coast Teaching Hospital

In the months to come, Brother John will continue being more than just a nurse. To his patients, he is poised to remain a confidant, a comforter, and frequently the last source of hope in times of despair. As the award citation makes its rounds, it will likely highlight his “invaluable contributions to quality healthcare” and “selfless service,” but we know countless untold stories are waiting to be shared. Imagine him walking extra miles to ensure rural patients receive care, mentoring younger nurses with patience, and instilling in them the ethos of empathy. Picture him staying past his shift to hold the hand of an elderly patient, long after the monitors have quieted.

 Why This Award Will Matter

As we approach the ceremony, it’s crucial to remember that Ghana’s healthcare workers, particularly in regions like Central Ghana, face immense challenges—limited resources, overcrowded facilities, and the emotional toll of saving lives in adversity. Awards like these, presented by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), will serve to do more than recognize excellence; they will shine a light on the resilience of those who serve in the shadows. Brother John’s anticipated win will resonate not just as a personal achievement; it will symbolize a triumph for every nurse and midwife tirelessly working, often without acknowledgment.

“We Will Celebrate You Today and Always”

As we prepare for the ceremony, the likely closing words from TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah will surely resonate: “Your commitment reminds us that heroism isn’t about grand gestures. It’s found in the quiet moments—the extra dose of kindness, the unwavering dedication when no one is watching.”

A Call to Honor All Healthcare Heroes

As we celebrate Brother John, let his story inspire us to see the humanity in every healthcare worker in the days ahead. They are the backbone of our communities, responding first to both joy and sorrow. The next time we meet a nurse or midwife, let us remember that their hands do more than administer medicine—they hold the fragile threads of life itself.

To Brother John Bamondo, and to every caregiver who gives their all—thank you in advance. The world is set to be brighter because of you.
