Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has assured President Bola Tinubu that the South East, particularly the Igbo people, will deliver over 70 percent of their votes in the 2027 general elections. He said this will serve as a token of appreciation for Tinubu’s dedication to the development of the region, particularly through the creation of the South East Development Commission (SEDC). Kalu made the statement in Ntalakwu, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, during a grand reception in his honor organized by the Atuma Grace Movement, a political group led by former lawmaker Emeka Atuma.
Kalu, who was conferred with the chieftaincy title “Dike Eji Aga Mba” (The People’s Warrior) by King Larry of the Ntalakwu ancient kingdom, commended President Tinubu for being the only Nigerian leader since the civil war to genuinely honor the promise of reconciliation and reconstruction made to the Igbo people by General Yakubu Gowon’s regime. He said Tinubu’s establishment and funding of the SEDC show a clear commitment to addressing the needs of rural communities and promoting inclusive development in the region.
He stressed that the Igbo remember and support leaders who demonstrate love and sincerity, and that Tinubu’s actions have earned him their loyalty. Kalu urged the people of the region to remain peaceful and united while continuing to support the current administration.
However, Kalu also expressed concern over reported interference by Abia State authorities, who allegedly discouraged traditional rulers from welcoming federal officials or attending events supporting President Tinubu. He criticized such actions as undemocratic and urged state authorities to allow freedom of association and political expression.
He said, “It is wrong to restrict traditional rulers from engaging with representatives of the federal government. The election is over; it is now time for governance and unity.”
Earlier, Emeka Atuma praised Kalu’s leadership and affirmed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is gaining strength in Abia State, thanks to the commitment of federal leaders and increasing grassroots support.
