MOURINHO’S TITLE DREAMS IN TURKEY SHATTERED AFTER DEFEAT TO OLE'S BESIKTAS

Jose Mourinho has dropped yet another crucial set of points, widening the gap between Fenerbahce and league leaders Galatasaray to 8 points. Fenerbahce currently sit second with 75 points, while Galatasaray leads the Turkish Super Lig with 83 points and only four matches remaining.

In a twist of fate, Mourinho lost to his former Premier League rival and friend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is now the manager of Besiktas. This defeat follows another disappointing result two weeks ago, when Fenerbahce drew against Kayserispor.

In contrast, Galatasaray have only grown stronger. Since their ironic loss to the same Besiktas, they’ve bounced back emphatically, scoring 14 goals and conceding just 3 in their last three matches.

Back to the match—like I always say, the Turkish derby remains one of the best rivalries in football. And of course, Besiktas vs Fenerbahce was a clash to remember.

Besiktas had an early chance to go ahead when they won a penalty, but Fernandes missed it. Interestingly, a closer look at the footage showed a laser pointer aimed at his face, though I doubt that was the real reason for the miss. Fortunately for him, he made amends in the 44th minute with a goal that gave Besiktas the lead. Fenerbahce never responded, and the match ended 1-0.

This game seemed to be the final straw for Mourinho, who has now failed to win any matches against the top four since his appointment. He's lost twice to Galatasaray (in both the league and the cup) and twice to Besiktas in the league.

Fenerbahce have not won the league in ten years, and this season's collapse means that drought will likely stretch to eleven. Meanwhile, Galatasaray are well on track for their third consecutive title. It’s easy to see where the frustration comes from.

Adding to the frustration of Fenerbahce fans is striker Youssef En-Nesyri, who has now gone six league matches without scoring. Yes, he hasn’t had the best support—especially from fans who keep comparing him to Galatasaray’s star striker Victor Osimhen. And who doesn’t like something better?

But in this match, En-Nesyri was simply awful. At least when Victor Osimhen doesn’t score, you still see his zeal. En-Nesyri, on the other hand, looked lifeless. He had zero shots—not even one off target—failed to win any aerial duels, completed no dribbles, and didn’t register a single key pass before being substituted in the 70th minute to a chorus of boos from the Fenerbahce crowd.

With this win, Besiktas climb to 4th place. Meanwhile, Galatasaray now need just two more wins—six points—to clinch the league title
