Chelsea’s early-season momentum, which once made them outside contenders for the Premier League title, seemed to fade as Cole Palmer endured an 18-game goal drought across all competitions. With their hopes of finishing in the top five under pressure, Palmer returned to form at a crucial moment, leading Chelsea to a vital 3-1 win over newly crowned champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool looked understandably flat following their recent title celebrations at Anfield, but Chelsea seized the opportunity—driven by the brilliance of their 22-year-old playmaker. Palmer was instrumental in all three goals, proving exactly why he remains central to Chelsea’s ambitions. He began by launching a smooth counterattack that led to Enzo Fernandez’s third-minute opener, followed by a blistering run and cross that resulted in a Liverpool own goal. His long-awaited goal finally arrived from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time, ending a 1,162-minute goal drought dating back to January.

Despite criticism and discussions surrounding his form, Palmer remained mentally strong, choosing to ignore social media negativity and instead focus on contributing to his team. He led all Chelsea players in shots (five), chances created (four), final-third passes (13), and touches in the opposition box (eight), delivering a complete performance.

Palmer now has 37 goals in 67 league appearances for Chelsea, placing him 10th on the club’s all-time league scorers list. Speaking after the match, he said the goal drought had only increased his determination to fight harder. Head coach Enzo Maresca praised Palmer’s consistency and positive attitude in training, while teammate Moises Caicedo called him “amazing” and deserving of the goal.

The victory brings Chelsea level on goal difference with fourth-placed Newcastle, setting up a pivotal clash on May 11. With remaining games against fellow top-five contenders, Chelsea’s fate is still in their hands—and with Palmer back to his best, they’ll feel confident heading into the season’s final stretch.
