Human rights advocate Dele Farotimi has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Peter Obi should he run for president in the 2027 elections. However, he expressed concern that discussions about the next election cycle are premature and distracting from the pressing issues Nigeria currently faces.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Farotimi emphasized that, if an election where votes genuinely count were held today, his choice would be Peter Obi. He explained that unless a more capable and credible candidate emerges, his support remains with the former Labour Party presidential candidate.

“If elections were to be held today and the votes were to truly count, I would vote for Peter Gregory Obi—unless someone else enters the race who I genuinely believe can do better,” Farotimi said. “If the candidates are the same as last time, my vote goes to Obi.”

He did, however, voice a desire for Obi to be more assertive in presenting clear and bold policy ideas. Still, he praised Obi’s competence and integrity, describing those qualities as unmatched by any other known contender.

“Something drastic would have to occur for me to reconsider my support,” Farotimi added. “That could be if he aligns with individuals whose values I cannot stomach. But aside from such a scenario, I see no reason to shift my support.”

Farotimi was critical of what he sees as an unhealthy focus on the 2027 elections when Nigeria is grappling with more urgent national problems. He argued that the country’s current political and socio-economic climate is not conducive to genuine democratic engagement.

“Our current obsession with the next election is, in my view, counterproductive. We are not in a place where meaningful elections can even take place under these conditions,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Farotimi’s endorsement of Obi is rooted in his ongoing hope for a transformed Nigeria—one built on credibility, vision, and genuine leadership.
