In a move aimed at strengthening security operations across Niger State, the state government has donated 25 operational vehicles to the Nigeria Police Force. The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve public safety, particularly in key urban areas where security challenges are more prevalent.

Governor Mohammed Bago announced the donation during the passing-out ceremony of 50 officers from the newly established Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 23 in Minna. The ceremony was held at the Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi Complex in the state capital.

According to a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the newly acquired vehicles will be handed over to the Niger State Police Command to boost its mobility and patrol effectiveness. “The Niger State government has procured 25 additional vehicles to donate to the Nigeria Police Force, Niger State command, to boost patrols, especially in major towns of the State,” the governor was quoted as saying.

Governor Bago also disclosed plans to construct new police barracks on the outskirts of Minna. This development is part of a strategic collaboration with the police to expand security coverage throughout the state capital and surrounding areas. He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for security agencies, stating, “My administration will continue to support the Nigeria Police and other security agencies as we work ambitiously to address the menace of insecurity in the state.”

The SPU Base 23 in Minna, which held its inaugural graduation of 50 personnel, is tailored to meet the rising need for elite security services, particularly for high-profile individuals such as government officials and dignitaries. The unit was initiated by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure specialized protection services are readily available.

Commander CSP Hassan Sani, who oversees the Minna base, provided details of the intensive two-week training the new officers underwent. This included VIP protection techniques, convoy movements, firearm proficiency, martial arts, self-defense, first aid, and fire safety. With the addition of the SPU and the operational vehicles, Niger State’s security infrastructure is expected to see significant improvement in both personnel readiness and response capability.
