The funny thing about both clubs reaching the Europa League final is that they both barely escaped the relegation zone in the Premier League—Spurs in 16th place and United in 15th. It seems both teams see winning the Europa League as the light at the end of the tunnel in what has been a rough season.
While winning the UEL grants automatic qualification to the Champions League, participants in the Champions League don’t get an automatic spot for the next season unless they win it. This means clubs like Arsenal could miss out on UCL qualification if they don’t finish in the top five this season—and, well, they look like they’re about to bottle second place. Sorry, Arsenal!
As a Manchester United fan, I know the stakes are high. I also know we’ve had a disgraceful season—because how can a club like United, who used to finish second, be struggling in 15th place? But winning the Europa League and getting that UCL qualification could take away the pain of this season.
