Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes Pope Leo XIV, the First American to Lead the Catholic Church
History was made in the Vatican on Thursday as Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election followed the fourth round of voting by the College of Cardinals, just a day after the conclave began.
At 69, Pope Leo XIV marks a first—he’s the first American ever chosen as Bishop of Rome. His emergence comes in the wake of the passing of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025.
Originally from Chicago, Prevost has deep roots in the Catholic faith. Ordained as a priest in 1982, he spent years as a missionary in Peru and later led the Augustinian Order. Pope Francis had earlier appointed him to various leadership roles, including Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and Cardinal in 2023.
Moments after white smoke signaled his selection, crowds outside the Sistine Chapel heard Cardinal Dominique Mamberti declare, “We have a Pope.” From the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, the new Pope greeted the world simply: “Peace be with all of you.”
In his first speech, Pope Leo XIV emphasized unity and compassion. “Peace be with you,” he repeated, drawing from the words of Christ, as he extended blessings not just to Catholics but to people around the world.
Global leaders wasted no time sending their congratulations. U.S. President Donald Trump called it “a great honour” and looked forward to meeting the new Pope. President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria said Pope Leo XIV’s election marks a new chapter for the Church and prayed for divine wisdom to guide his mission.
Colombia’s President Petro expressed hope that the Pope would advocate for migrant communities, while Israel’s President Herzog spoke about deepening interfaith relations. Leaders from Russia, Germany, Spain, Poland, and the EU also praised the Pope’s message of peace, dialogue, and unity.
From Chicago to the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV’s journey is already inspiring millions across the globe.
