Barcelona completed their domestic treble by winning La Liga in the match against Espanyol. However, everyone is talking about the 'wonder kid' from La Masia — the 17-year-old Spanish-Moroccan, Lamine Yamal.
Proud and confident at 17, Lamine Yamal has already achieved things that football legends can only dream of. He has won the 2024 UEFA euros with Spain, the Copa del Rey, two La Liga titles, and the Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona. He is the first player to win La Liga twice before turning 18. With two La Liga trophies to his name, he has now equaled Cristiano Ronaldo's La Liga title count.
This season, Yamal has been on fire for Barça, recording 21 assists and 17 goals in 53 matches. His name is now in the 2025 Ballon d'Or conversation, despite being out of the UEFA Champions League. Recall that last year's Ballon d'Or winner, Rodri from Manchester City, did not win the UCL. Instead, it was Vinícius Júnior — who finished second — that lifted the UCL trophy with Real Madrid. This shows that winning the UCL is not always the most important factor for the Ballon d'Or.
Of course, if PSG wins the UCL, we can talk about Ousmane Dembélé. But Yamal’s contributions this season simply can’t go unnoticed.
At Barça, when talking about Ballon d'Or contenders, Raphinha could also be considered. PR plays a major role in who wins the award, and with both Yamal and Raphinha likely to be nominated, it might be hard to split the attention between them. However, I still believe Yamal is the better player.
Even in the Champions League match against Inter Milan, their coach Simone Inzaghi described Yamal as the most dangerous Barcelona player on the pitch.
Recall that last year, Yamal won the FIFA Golden Boy award. Not only that, Ballon d'Or winner Rodri stated that Yamal would win the Ballon d'Or very soon.
He’s just 17, with plenty of time ahead of him — but for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, Lamine Yamal is already a strong contender.
