Manchester City has withdrawn from the race to sign Florian Wirtz, as reported by Sami Mokbel of the BBC and also reposted by Fabrizio Romano. The club believes that the total package to secure the player would be around €300 million, which they consider too expensive. According to reports, City has now turned its attention to Morgan Gibbs-White.
Florian Wirtz began his professional career after transferring to Bayer Leverkusen from FC Köln in January 2020. He made his Bundesliga debut on May 18, 2020, and scored his first league goal in June—coincidentally against Bayern Munich, who would later become one of Leverkusen’s biggest rivals.
He earned his Germany debut in 2021. However, his development was halted by an ACL tear sustained in March 2022 during a match against his former club, FC Köln. This injury ruled him out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In a show of resilience, Wirtz returned to competitive football in January 2023. He played a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen’s title-winning 2023/2024 season, ending Bayern Munich’s long-standing dominance in the Bundesliga with 11 goals and 11 assists in 32 matches. He also helped Leuverkeusen secure a UCL spot with 10 goals and 12 assists, helping them finish 2nd on the Bundelsliga table
Despite Manchester City’s withdrawal, Liverpool and Bayern Munich remain in the race to sign the German playmaker. However, Leverkusen would reportedly prefer to sell him to Liverpool—having already sold Jeremie Frimpong to the club—rather than to direct rivals Bayern. Recall that Bayern are also favorites to sign their long standing defender Jonathan Tah as a free agent this summer as it stands.
One of the reasons, Bayern Munich are confident they can get Flo signature is that the player might not want a nice out of the Bundelsliga. Also in Bayern Munich, he gets to play with German buddy,Jamal Musiala .
However despite Bayern's confidence, the race for Florian Wirtz’s signature is still very much open.
