Real Madrid are reportedly in the market for a new left-back, according to Fabrizio Romano. This move is part of their plans to fix ongoing defensive issues, especially as players like Lucas Vázquez—primarily a winger—Fede Valverde, a midfielder, and Aurélien Tchouaméni have all been deployed in defensive roles at times.
One of their top targets is Benfica left-back Álvaro Fernández Carreras. Known for his attacking prowess, Carreras began his football journey at Galicia de Caranza before joining Racing de Ferrol in 2007. He initially played as a forward but transitioned into a left-back in 2012 when he joined Deportivo de La Coruña’s youth academy. His development continued at Real Madrid's youth system (La Fábrica) from 2017 to 2020, before he signed with Manchester United.
Despite being named Manchester United’s U23 Player of the Year, Carreras did not make a senior appearance for the club. Instead, he was sent on loan to Preston North End, then to Granada, and later to Portuguese side Benfica. Benfica later activated his €6 million buy option to make the move permanent.
Manchester United reportedly have an €18 million buy-back clause for Carreras. However, it is doubtful whether the Red Devils will exercise it, especially with Real Madrid now showing interest. When Real Madrid comes calling, it takes a strong-willed player not to answer.
Benfica has set his release clause at €50 million, but Real Madrid is said to be trying to negotiate that fee down. Reports suggest that Madrid would prefer United to activate their buy-back clause and then sell the player to them at a lower price. However, this scenario seems unlikely, as United may prefer not to damage their relationship with Benfica, a club known for producing top youth talent.
Moreover, United reportedly included a sell-on clause in the deal, meaning they would receive a percentage of any future sale should Benfica decide to sell Carreras.
Carreras is reportedly keen on a move to Real Madrid and has already agreed personal terms. If he does join, he would become another defensive signing under Xabi Alonso, following the arrivals of Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join from Liverpool.
