featured img

How to Cook Spicy Ghanaian Kelewele Kelewele is a delicious Ghanaian street food consisting of ripe plantains, seasoned with a spicy mix of ingredients, deep-fried until golden brown. Kelewele is known for being sweet, spicy and fragrant, which is why it is a common snack or side-dish enjoyed all over Ghana! To make kelewele for about four, you will need ripe but firm plantains, onion, ginger, scotch bonnet peppers (or cayenne pepper), and optional spices of cloves, aniseed, or calabash nutmeg. You may also want salt, and seasoning cubes for added flavor.

First, peel and cut the plantains into diagonal slices, or small cubes. Blend the onion, ginger, peppers, and spices into a smooth paste, and mix with the plantains to coat. Allow to marinate for a minimum of 10–15 minutes.

Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan. When hot, taking care, gently lower the seasoned plantains into the oil and fry in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry until golden brown and crispy on the edges, about 5–7 minutes per batch. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Kelewele is usually served hot by itself, but can also be served with roasted groundnuts (peanuts), or along with jollof rice, grilled meats, or salad. The balance of sweet plantains, and bold spices defines the perfect kelewele. This dish offers a fast, simple, and delicious way to sample and enjoy the vibrant flavors of Ghanaian cuisine and is suitable for casual snacking or at special celebrations.
