Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has announced that members of the Union have been asked to lower transportation charges by 15% from Saturday, May 24, 2025.
"The fuel price has reduced by almost 18%. So we have a history of dividing it by three and using one-third. However, we agreed on 15% depending on gasoline prices. We are also optimistic that our brethren in the spare parts market would lower their rates," he said. We want to make it clear that we did not wait for the other components of our cost structure to be reduced before implementing the 15% decrease. The lubricants remain where they are, as do documentations like as permits, taxes, and DVLA, which we have been paying, but we see this as our contribution to Ghana's resetting, and we have launched this effort," Alhaji Moro added. According to him, this is the result of a meeting between the GPRTU's National Executive and the Minister of Transportation.
“We met with the Transport Ministry today after a marathon meeting, we finally decided to reduce transport fares by 15 percent, effective coming Saturday (May 25),” he stated in an exclusive interview with Alfred Ocansey in a yet to be aired interview on Ghana Tonight.
He emphasized that Union members who fail to comply with the instruction would bear responsibility for themselves.
"We are in Ghana, and all citizens must obey the law. Every time we raise truck charges, everyone benefits from the rise; similarly, if there is a reduction, everyone should be willing to cooperate. If someone refuses to comply, travellers should contact the local police station. We are not advocating they should be beaten; rather, we are appealing that no one be beaten, but that it be turned over to the next police officers who come across," he remarked.
