UTAG-UG threatens Auditor-General.

Resign or we petition the presidency to remove you - UTAG-UG threatens Auditor-General

The University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has called for the resignation of Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, warning that it will petition the Presidency for his removal if he fails to step down voluntarily.

This demand follows the release of a special payroll verification report by the Auditor-General’s office, which accuses the University of Ghana of inflating staff salaries by GH¢59.2 million between 2022 and 2024.

UTAG-UG has firmly rejected the report’s findings, labeling them as “destructive and deceptive.” The association argues that the university was not given the opportunity to address or clarify any discrepancies before the report was made public.

In an interview with Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, May 20, UTAG-UG Secretary Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison criticized the Auditor-General’s conduct, describing it as unethical and inappropriate for someone in such a high-ranking position.

“We must begin to think about ethics and hold ourselves to a higher standard. It’s not just about morality. Countries that have developed did so because of strong ethical foundations, not merely moral values. People must know their limits, regardless of what the law allows,” Dr. Harrison was quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com.

He also raised doubts about whether the Auditor-General personally reviewed the report before its release, suggesting the issue highlights deeper systemic problems within the Audit Service.

“I may be wrong, but I believe he needs to reflect and acknowledge that his continued stay in office is no longer justifiable. If he refuses to resign, as we’ve stated, we will proceed to petition the Presidency for his removal,” he added.

UTAG-UG insists that the audit report has unfairly tarnished the reputation of the university and its staff. The association reaffirmed its commitment to seeking accountability and restoring public confidence in state institutions.
