Ivory Coast is currently gripped by chaos following an alleged coup on Sunday, 19 May 2025, that has left the West African nation on edge. In a development that has raised even more alarm, the country’s Chief of Army Staff, General Lassina, died on Monday, 20 May, after reportedly sustaining gunshot wounds during the unrest. He passed away at a military hospital in Abidjan, leaving the country’s leadership in question and citizens in fear.

Although no official statement has been released by government authorities, multiple local and international social media platforms have been flooded with videos and posts claiming that the coup was quick and strategically executed. Sounds of gunfire were allegedly heard around major government buildings, including the presidential palace, prompting widespread panic.

Adding to the uncertainty, President Alassane Ouattara’s whereabouts remain unknown, and there has been no communication from the government since the incident began. Military patrols have been spotted in key cities, and residents have been strongly advised to remain indoors to avoid potential violence.

General Lassina’s death has only added to the confusion. Seen by many as one of the President’s most trusted allies, his knowledge of the administration's movements may have been critical. His passing leaves a significant vacuum in the chain of command during an already volatile period.

International bodies such as the African Union, ECOWAS, and the United Nations have expressed concern and are closely monitoring the situation. The fear of wider regional instability is rising, particularly in light of recent coups in neighboring countries like Mali and Burkina Faso.

Meanwhile, citizens have taken to social media, using hashtags like #ResettingIvoryCoast and #AfricaWillRiseAgain, to share their concerns, hopes, and demands for a peaceful transition.

The coming days will be critical. As the world watches, the people of Ivory Coast are left asking the same questions: Who is in charge? Is the President safe? And what comes next?
