Data Prices Will Reduce By The End Of The Year Sam George Promises Ghanaians

A recent video featuring Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has ignited intense public reaction on social media. In the video, which is now making rounds on Twitter (X), the Minister assures Ghanaians that mobile data costs will be reduced by the end of the year—a promise that has drawn both support and criticism.

Addressing the public in a confident tone, Sam George reiterated his commitment to making internet access more affordable. “To the young people and the people of this country, my promise was that at the end of this year, we will see prices of data drop, and I remain committed to it. We will deliver on that. Trust the process,” he said.

He revealed that a comprehensive roadmap is already in place to address the long-standing issue of expensive data rates. According to him, the plan is part of the government’s broader goal of ensuring that digital services become more accessible to every Ghanaian, regardless of income level or location.

Despite his optimistic tone, the reaction online has been far from unanimous. While some users expressed cautious hope, others were openly critical, accusing the government of playing politics with essential services.

One Twitter user, @nkosochene, questioned the intent behind the timing of any proposed data reductions. “They are increasing data now so that end of year they’ll drop it back to what it used to be,” the user wrote. “We’re not falling for that.”

Another, @KwameAto, was frustrated by the timeline: “End of year is too far. Vodafone is already raising prices, and then they’ll pretend to reduce it again like they’re doing us a favor. Drop the prices now!”

Others took a more personal jab at the Minister. @Benjamin wrote, “You're all talk. When you were in opposition, you criticized endlessly. Now that you have the position, it’s just excuses. You shouldn’t even be a minister.”

Similarly, @selvin added, “Back then, you acted like solving the problem was simple. Now you’re in charge and realizing it’s not so easy, huh? Watch, they’ll cut it by 5% and call it a win.”

Amid the backlash, a segment of the public is still holding out hope. Some believe that if the Minister follows through, it could signal real progress in making digital tools more accessible, especially for students, entrepreneurs, and small business owners who rely heavily on affordable internet access.

As public frustration over rising data prices continues to grow, the pressure on the Ministry has never been higher. For now, the promise remains just that—a promise. But with the clock ticking toward year-end, citizens are watching closely to see whether words will translate into real, tangible relief.
