Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has raised an emotional alarm following an incident at his residence on Friday, May 23, 2025. According to Wontumi, his house was surrounded by heavily armed security officers, leaving him in a state of panic and confusion.
Speaking during a live phone interview on Wontumi TV’s morning show, the influential NPP figure broke down in tears. His voice trembled as he pleaded for help, claiming that he was being targeted unfairly. He said that despite his loyalty to the NPP, he has never held any government position and does not understand why he is being treated this way.
“What have I done wrong?” he asked tearfully. “I can’t even pay my children’s school fees. They have closed down all my businesses and frozen my bank accounts. This is too much.”
Chairman Wontumi believes the actions against him are politically motivated and aimed at intimidating him. He directed a message to President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of abusing his authority and asking him to stop what he called unjust treatment. He emphasized that such acts of intimidation are dangerous for Ghana’s democratic development.
Chairman Wontumi’s emotional outburst came shortly after the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, confirmed that armed security men had indeed stormed Wontumi’s house. While details remain unclear, some reports suggest the raid might be linked to legal issues surrounding his mining firm, Akonta Mining.
Throughout the phone call, Wontumi repeatedly asked for support from Ghanaians, especially his fellow party members, saying he feared for his safety. “I am being punished because of my love for the NPP,” he said.
The incident has sparked national attention, with many calling for a fair investigation and expressing concern over the use of state security in politically sensitive matters.
