Tragedy has struck the family of New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Alfred Ababio Kumi, after his wife reportedly suffered a miscarriage following his arrest by armed security personnel in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025.

Kumi’s mother, Nana Ama Owusu, shared the painful news during an interview. She disclosed that her daughter-in-law, who was four months pregnant, began bleeding heavily after being startled by the aggressive manner in which officers raided their home around 5:30 a.m. The miscarriage has left the entire family devastated, and the woman is currently receiving medical care.

According to Nana Ama, about eight armed men arrived at the house, with only one dressed in police uniform while the rest wore plain clothes. “Two of the men said they were from the CID, and I asked them to speak to me, but one pushed me aside,” she said. “They entered the house forcefully.”

She narrated that the officers struck the gate violently with the butts of their rifles to gain entry. Kumi’s wife, upon hearing the noise, rushed to open the gate but panicked when she saw the armed men. In the confusion, one of the officers reportedly ordered a warning shot to be fired. Startled and terrified, she stumbled, fell, and began to bleed profusely.

Despite the family’s pleas to accompany Kumi, the officers ignored them and took him away. They were later informed that he had been detained at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

The arrest is believed to be linked to Kumi’s recent petition addressed to President John Dramani Mahama. In the petition, Kumi demanded the dissolution of the committee probing the potential removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He accused some committee members of misconduct, claiming that on May 15, 2025, Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, and Yonny Kulendi met privately with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at a restaurant, where they allegedly discussed the ongoing case.
