Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, is under heavy criticism over reports of purchasing a luxury V8 vehicle while failing to deliver on his pledge to reduce data costs. The backlash is being amplified across television, YouTube, Facebook, and especially TikTok, with growing calls for accountability under President John Mahama’s administration.

The storm began on May 20, 2025, when North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in an interview on TV3, condemned the use of lavish V8 vehicles by ministers only four months into office. He urged citizens to photograph and expose such extravagance. Ablakwa specifically pointed fingers at Sam George, accusing him of hypocrisy. In a viral post by @SIKAOFFICIAL1 on X (formerly Twitter), George was accused of acquiring a taxpayer-funded V8, contradicting his 2024 position against government waste.

Ablakwa, who chairs the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, said this behavior undermines the new administration’s credibility. He referenced his earlier investigation into Kennedy Osei Nyarko’s controversial land deal as a benchmark for holding officials accountable.

U.S.-based broadcaster Kevin Taylor intensified the pressure during a TikTok live session on May 22. He labeled Sam George “arrogant” and “foolish,” slamming him for saying one thing in opposition and doing another in power. Taylor reminded viewers of George’s 2024 criticism of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s policy address and compared it to his current failure to address high data prices. “You’re living large while we suffer,” Taylor said, threatening to campaign against George in Ningo-Prampram.

TikTokers like @tech_twi joined the outcry, exposing clips of George’s past complaints about data pricing under the NPP and contrasting them with his current excuse that price reduction is complicated due to telecom ownership structures.

In his defense, George told MyNewsGH on May 22 that a committee set up in February is working with the NCA and telecom stakeholders, and data prices would drop by year-end.
