Former Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp has revealed that he is disappointed in the Liverpool fans who booed Trent. Recall that Trent had announced he was leaving his boyhood club, Liverpool, on a free transfer after spending 20 years at the club, including his time in the academy. This announcement, however, did not go down well with some sections of Liverpool fans who were unhappy with his decision to leave on a free transfer despite having a market value of £100 million. What made it worse was that, according to reports, the player is likely heading to Real Madrid and had been planning to run down his contract for a while.
These fans made their displeasure known by booing him when he came on for Conor Bradley in their draw against Arsenal. However, Klopp has stated that although fans have every right to be disappointed that he’s leaving, booing him wasn’t the answer.
He said in a video broadcasted on Sky Sports and BBC Sport: “I’m not saying don’t be disappointed he’s leaving… but don’t forget what he’s done for the club.”
“I heard the booing and switched off my TV. I couldn’t have been more disappointed. This isn’t us.”
Recall that Mohamed Salah had also defended his teammate Trent.
Recall that Klopp, who was hired as Liverpool manager in 2015, is the only senior manager Trent had before Arne Slot. Trent made his professional debut in 2016 under Klopp and went on to win a Champions League, a Premier League, Carabao Cups, and FA Cups under him. In January 2024, Klopp announced that he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season and was given a proper farewell at his last home match at Anfield in May 2024, where Trent even cried. Of course, we know Trent and Klopp are close, having spent eight years together on the pitch.
