Video of the altercations has been circulated on social media, and preliminary reports suggest the use of tear gas. One video shows people hurling chairs and other items in a city centre square. In additional video, individuals wearing police uniforms are seen approaching supporters, some of whom are dressed in Chelsea colours, before releasing what are reportedly tear gas cannons.
Fans of both sides had gathered in Wroclaw Square earlier in the day, creating serene scenes. But by the evening, when the police showed up, things seemed to have changed.The Conference League final between Chelsea and Betis is scheduled to take place in the city on Wednesday. Nonetheless, some social media users who were following the events expressed their worries.Reports differed on the cause of the disruption. But there was a lot of criticism directed at those who were observed participating in the activities.
Imagine travelling to a beautiful European city to watch your team play in the finals, then deciding to fight and damage cafes and restaurants. One person on social media wrote. Another merely advised locals to "stay safe."Another was saddened by the actions of people they had just visited in the city centre. "Just last year, I visited both of those bars. They wrote, "Nice people, one of the best places I've been."Betis defeated two-time finalists Fiorentina to secure their spot in Wednesday's showpiece, while Chelsea advanced to the final by defeating Swedish team Djurgardens in the semifinals. Blues manager Enzo Maresca described the importance of the game to his team during a pregame press conference.
"The message over the past 48 hours has been, 'We did something important [qualifying for the Champions League], but we need to show the desire to win the game and the trophy if we want to confirm that we are becoming an important club again,'" Maresca stated.So, the Premier League job is done, it's great, and we're satisfied. However, we want to win at all costs because tomorrow is a different game—a final."There is no question that we have something to prove every day. Our Champions League qualification is complete. Tomorrow, we must once more prove ourselves. We only have one more game left in this competition after playing a lot this season."
