Ghana Mourns: Former Greater Accra NDC Chairman Ade Coker Passes Away
Ghana's political landscape, particularly the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is in mourning following the sad news of the passing of Joseph Ade Coker, the former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party. The veteran politician died on Sunday, June 30th, 2024, in South Africa, after a period of illness. He was 77 years old.
Ade Coker was a formidable and often polarizing figure within the NDC, known for his outspoken nature and deep roots in Accra politics. He served as the Greater Accra Regional Chairman for an impressive 16 years, from 1998 until his resignation in 2014. His tenure spanned a crucial period in the party's history, navigating internal dynamics and multiple national election campaigns.
His leadership style was marked by both fierce loyalty to the party and moments of significant controversy. Most notably, his handling of the contentious 2015 parliamentary primaries in Tema West, which led to the disqualification of popular candidate Irene Naa Torshie Addo, resulted in a highly publicized clash with the party's founder, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings. Rawlings famously labeled Coker a "political dinosaur" during the fallout, highlighting the internal tensions.
Before his regional chairmanship, Coker held significant positions, including Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Public Relations Officer and Chairman of the Accra-Tema Taxi Drivers Association. His influence stemmed from a strong grassroots connection, particularly within the Ablekuma South constituency and the Osu Klottey community where he hailed from. He was also a successful businessman involved in transport and quarry operations.
News of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes. NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey confirmed the passing, expressing deep sorrow. President John Dramani Mahama described Coker as "a stalwart of the NDC" whose "commitment and dedication to the party... were unwavering." Current Greater Accra NDC Chairman, Nii Armah Ashietey, hailed him as "a mentor and a pillar."
While his later years saw him step back from frontline politics, Ade Coker remained a respected elder whose opinions carried weight. His passing leaves a void in the NDC's Greater Accra structure and marks the end of an era defined by robust, grassroots political mobilization. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Ghana remembers a passionate political figure whose impact on Accra and the NDC will not be quickly forgotten. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
