I SMILED IN THE MAZE

I Smiled in the Maze

Within the twists of my own mind, I wander a maze of shadows and echoes, where doubts coil like vines and fears whisper from unseen corners. Yet, in this labyrinth of self, I found a spark—a moment where I smiled, not in defiance, but in discovery. That fleeting joy, bright as a firefly, lit a path through the dark, reminding me that even in confusion, there’s beauty to be found.

Lost in the Turns

The maze began in my youth, its walls built from questions I couldn’t answer. Who am I? Where am I going? Each step seemed to lead to another dead end—rejections, heartaches, dreams that crumbled like dry leaves. I remember a night at 17, sitting on my bedroom floor, journal open, trying to write my way out of sadness. The words felt hollow, but the act of writing was a thread, pulling me forward.

I think of my father, who faced his own mazes—years of working jobs he hated to keep us fed. He’d hum old songs, a quiet rebellion against despair. That resilience shaped me, though I didn’t see it then. In my maze, I carried his hum, searching for a way to make sense of the turns.

The Unexpected Light

One day, deep in the labyrinth, I stumbled into a moment of clarity. It was nothing grand—just a morning walk in a park, the air crisp, leaves crunching underfoot. A child ran past, chasing a kite, her laughter pure and unburdened. I smiled, not because the world had changed, but because I saw it differently. That child’s joy was a mirror, reflecting a part of me I’d forgotten—a part that could still find wonder.

I recall a poetry class in college, where a professor read Rumi’s lines about dancing in the wound. I didn’t understand it fully, but that morning in the park, it clicked. My maze wasn’t a trap; it was a journey. Smiling in that moment wasn’t denial—it was acceptance, a choice to find light even when the path was unclear.

Navigating with Joy

Since then, I’ve carried that smile like a lantern. The maze hasn’t vanished; I still face its twists—days when doubt creeps back, when the walls feel too tight. But I pause, remembering the kite, the laughter, the crunch of leaves. I write poems now, not to escape, but to map my way. They’re messy, raw, but each one is a step, a mark that says, “I was here, and I kept going.”

I think of my sister, who faced her own struggles with anxiety. She’d draw tiny sketches to calm her mind, each a small victory. Like her, my smiles are small—a kind word shared, a stranger’s nod, a line of verse that feels true. They don’t solve the maze, but they light the next turn.

An Invitation to Smile

My labyrinth is mine, but you have your own. Its walls may loom, its paths may twist, but somewhere within, there’s a moment waiting—a spark to guide you. Look for it in the small things: a song that lifts your heart, a memory that warms you, a laugh that surprises you. That’s where I smiled, and it changed my journey.

Keep wandering, even when you’re lost forever. Carry your doubts, your fears, but don’t let them dim your light. Smile in your maze, and let it lead you to yourself.
