Ghana has formally declared support for Moroccoβs autonomy plan regarding the disputed Western Sahara region, positioning itself among a growing group of nations aligning with Rabat's stance on the long-running territorial conflict.
In a joint statement issued after a diplomatic meeting in Rabat between Ghanaβs Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, Ghana described Moroccoβs proposal as βthe only realistic and sustainable basisβ for a peaceful, mutually acceptable resolution within the framework of the United Nations.
This move aligns Ghana with countries such as the United Kingdom and Kenya, who have recently expressed similar support for Moroccoβs approach to the decades-old dispute with the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which continues to advocate for an independent Western Sahara.
Beyond diplomacy, Ghana and Morocco have deepened bilateral ties with agreements in several areas. The two countries committed to enhancing defense cooperation and finalizing a visa waiver agreement to facilitate travel and trade. In the field of agriculture and food security, Moroccoβs OCP Group β a global leader in phosphate-based fertilizers β is expected to support Ghana in strengthening cocoa farming and reducing the nation's heavy reliance on food imports, which currently exceed $3 billion annually.
Foreign Minister Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana remains a supportive partner in Moroccoβs regional efforts, particularly the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline initiative and plans to help landlocked Sahelian nations gain better access to global markets via the Atlantic coast.
Moroccan Minister Bourita hailed Ghanaβs endorsement of the autonomy plan as a significant gesture that enhances bilateral relations and sets the stage for deeper economic and political cooperation.
The Moroccan autonomy proposal has seen a surge in international endorsements, especially since the United States recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020. France followed suit in 2024, further boosting Rabatβs international backing.
