Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged the youth, particularly those living in Zongo communities, to take full advantage of national development programmes that aim to reduce unemployment and foster economic inclusion.
Addressing the Muslim community during the Eid al-Adha celebrations at the Black Star Square in Accra, Mahama emphasized the importance of youth empowerment in building a prosperous nation. He highlighted initiatives like the National Apprenticeship Programme and the Adwumawura Initiative as practical opportunities for young Ghanaians to gain employable skills, mentorship, and start-up capital for entrepreneurship.
According to Mahama, the Adwumawura Initiative offers not just funding but also training and guidance to help aspiring youth establish and manage small businesses effectively. He noted that these interventions are crucial in today’s economy, where youth unemployment remains a major challenge. He encouraged the youth not to wait for government jobs but to take bold steps toward creating their own economic futures through such programmes.
The former President also unveiled plans for a Zongo Development Framework, aimed specifically at uplifting marginalized communities. The framework will target key sectors such as infrastructure, health, sanitation, sports, and vocational training. He emphasized that every Ghanaian child deserves an equal shot at success, whether they are born in a Zongo neighborhood or a privileged area like Airport Residential.
Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive development and reducing the gap between well-developed urban centers and underserved communities. He also called for continued peaceful coexistence among the country’s diverse religious and ethnic groups. He appealed to Muslims to continue upholding Ghana’s values of unity, tolerance, and mutual respect.
Mahama’s speech served not only as a rallying call for Zongo youth to rise and take charge of their future but also as a policy direction signaling his development priorities if re-elected. His focus on empowering the youth through education, skills development, and entrepreneurship continues to resonate with many across the nation.
