Borussia Dortmund has just signed Jobe Bellingham, five years after they brought his older brother, Jude, into the fold. Jobe really made a name for himself this past season, winning the Championship Young Player of the Season award while helping Sunderland clinch the Championship play-off, which means they’re back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017. It’s pretty exciting, right? He’s set to follow in Jude’s footsteps and will be participating in this summer’s Club World Cup.
Now, from what I hear, Dortmund shelled out an initial fee of €32 million (that’s around £26.9 million) to bring him to Signal Iduna Park. Plus, there’s an additional €5 million (about £4.2 million) in add-ons that Sunderland will receive over the course of his five-year contract in Germany. Jobe expressed his excitement about the move, saying, “I’m very happy to be a Borussia Dortmund player now and to fight for titles together with this great club.” He also mentioned wanting to celebrate success with the fans and that he’s ready to put in the work every day.
As clubs scramble to meet Tuesday’s deadline for the FIFA Club World Cup, it’s all pretty hectic!
After an incredible promotion run with Sunderland, Jobe is off to tackle a new challenge in the Bundesliga, just like Jude did when he was younger. Before heading out, the 19-year-old took to social media to share his heartfelt thanks to the Black Cats fans, acknowledging their unwavering support during his time on Wearside.
He wrote: “Dear Sunderland, it’s time for me to say farewell to all the loyal people of Sunderland, who have powered me through two incredible years in Red & White. Your support has blown me away, especially during tough times we faced together. You welcomed me like family when I left home for the first time, and I’m proud of how strong our bond has become. I’ll always be grateful for your support, and I’ll carry that with me, no matter where my career takes me.
“I hope I’ve made you proud, and you’ve made me the player I am today. Thank you. I’ll cherish my time here and remember you fondly for the rest of my life.”
This transfer is a big deal—not just because of the talent loss, but it’s also the most expensive outgoing transfer in Sunderland’s history. The deal with Dortmund is believed to be around €33 million, with another €5 million if Jobe hits certain performance milestones. If those bonuses kick in, it’ll surpass the £30 million Sunderland got from Everton for Jordan Pickford back in 2017. Sure, it’s tough to see him go, but hey, that financial boost is a big help as Sunderland prepares for their first Premier League season in eight years. Exciting times ahead!
