LIVERPOOL FACE OBSTACLE IN SELLING STRIKER DARWIN NUNEZ TO HELP FUND FLORIAN WIRTZ SIGNING, JARELL

Liverpool seems to have its sights set on selling Darwin Nunez to help fund a big move for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, the German club might be eyeing a deal for Reds defender Jarell Quansah. Over at Chelsea, they’re apparently looking to offload both Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix this summer. And let’s not forget Newcastle United, who still haven’t settled on a fee for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Now, back to Nunez. It looks like Liverpool is on the hunt for a buyer, but the Uruguay international isn’t exactly itching to make a switch to Saudi Arabia right now. Liverpool’s hoping to sell him during the summer transfer window, in part to finance that potential record-breaking deal for Wirtz. But, as always, there are a few bumps in the road. The Reds are still hammering out the details with Bayer Leverkusen. Their most recent offer? Well, it was £100 million plus an extra £14 million in add-ons. Both sides seem optimistic that the transfer will happen, and Liverpool's exploring different ways to raise the cash. Oh, and by the way, Al Hilal reached out on Monday looking for a new forward ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, so they’re definitely interested in getting something done.

Switching gears, Bayer Leverkusen is also eyeing Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah as they look to rebuild their squad this summer. They’re already in talks with Liverpool about Wirtz, but now they’ve added Quansah to their list of centre-back prospects after losing Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich. Mario Hermoso has headed back after his loan from Roma, and it looks like Odilon Kossounou won’t be returning following his loan at Atalanta, which had a purchase option. Just so you know, any pursuit of Quansah, who’s valued at over £40 million, would be a separate deal from Wirtz. Both clubs are wrapping up negotiations for Wirtz to join the Premier League side.

In early May, Slot had some interesting thoughts about the challenges of finding new signings. It’s been tough for those players on the edge of the squad to break into the starting lineup. If the level of new signings goes up, some of these fringe players might need to seek playing time elsewhere. "We just won the league, and we were really competitive against PSG in the Champions League. Finding better players to improve us isn’t easy," the Dutchman mentioned to reporters. "They have to be available, and we’ve got to afford them."

So, who’s potentially on the way out of Anfield to help finance that big move for Wirtz?

Dominik Szoboszlai played a crucial role in Liverpool's title victory in the 2024-25 season. His relentless energy was key to Slot's pressing strategy. He really shone in those important wins against Manchester City and Newcastle back in February. But, to be honest, his 16 direct goal contributions felt a bit underwhelming, especially for someone who was often positioned just behind the front three.

Fans were understandably buzzing when news broke that Liverpool was leading the charge to sign Florian Wirtz, who many see as one of the most exciting No.10s out there right now.

And let's take a moment to celebrate Andy Robertson. It was great to see him snag his second Premier League winners' medal; he truly deserves it. That should put to rest any doubts about him being one of the best left-backs in the competition's history. But, here’s the thing: the 2024-25 season really highlighted that Robertson is on the decline, which, honestly, is totally natural for a 31-year-old.

After so many seasons of intense play, it was bound to catch up with him. Just look at his numbers: one assist in 33 Premier League matches? That’s tough. At times, he seemed to struggle defensively, especially in those matches against Fulham, where Antonee Robinson, who’s been talked about as his potential successor, really made him look bad.
